Post subject:  Strange error message?

I just downloaded an audiobook from Audible, and I would like to use Audiobook Builder on it, but when I try to import the files from iTunes I get the message "Unable to load movie data from file"?

The file is encoded as 4.aa.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Two things are happening in your case:

One, Audible.com files are in a protected but proprietary format, so Audiobook Builder sees them as plain data files with no audio content. That will lead to the error you've received.

Two, Audiobook Builder relies on QuickTime's ability to open audio and/or movie files with audio. When it loads the data into memory it's actually a "movie" in the QuickTime sense of the word, which is just a collection of any kind of data tracks, including audio, video, text, sprites, Flash, MPEG, etc., along with information about how to handle these tracks. With this in mind we set up two error conditions - one for when QuickTime can't load the file at all ("unable to load movie data") and another for when QuickTime doesn't see any audio tracks in the loaded movie data ("no audio in file"). These seem to be too specific, or at least not worded well enough, from the end user's perspective. For them there's no difference between "no movie data" and "no audio data". It's actually confusing, too, because they will typically only load up audio files - though they'll find any QuickTime-supported movie container with audio tracks will also load, ie. a movie trailer from Apple's website. To us, no movie data means QuickTime didn't understand the file, so we can't move on to some preliminary checks before pulling the audio, if any, out of the file. It's somewhat necessary for us to have both errors, not so much for the end user. Maybe we should just remove the word "movie", so it becomes "Unable to load data from file", and leave it at that?

Hi Keith,

Actually all I really want to do is change the ugly artwork provided . When I try to change it in iTunes through "get info" both the add and delete buttons are grayed out.

I don't suppose you might know of a fix for this.

PS. I love the product.

Thanks,
Michael

Eww. It sounds like that's a "benefit" of the proprietary format. There's no legal and/or practical way to help out on that, though. :(
