I've used AudioBook Builder for a long time and recently started to encounter the dreaded Unable to copy a temporary file error. I don't quite understand what's going on since iTunes has no problem importing it and this is a brand new set of discs from the Library. This isn't an issue with dirt or scratches, so why does your software fail when iTunes imports it effortlessly?

For the record, here's the entire error message:

Audiobook Builder 1.5.3
Importing
Unable to copy a temporary file
Source: /Volumes/Audio CD/1 Audio Track.aiff
Destination: /var/folders/45/n692_kvd0p97j1w8wdhw_6k00000gp/T/.audiobookbuildercdimporttemp.0
File error: -128

Error -128 usually means a disk I/O error - in other words, the Mac is having trouble reading from a CD. This usually results from a scratched or dirty disc, but since you say that the CD's are brand new, then it is certainly unusual that you would receive this error. There may be an issue with the CD that isn't necessarily visible.

iTunes does tend to handle damaged CD's a little better when using error correction to import. The importing with iTunes may seem effortless, but iTunes won't present an error message when it encounters an issue reading the CD. Instead it will just go back to a damaged area of a CD repeatedly until it is able to pull something off of it.

In order to delve deeper in to finding out more about what is going on with your particular issue, it would be awesome to see a System Information/Profiler report just after the error occurs. So, would you be willing to replicate the issue in Audiobook Builder and then just after generate the report and send it over to us at support@splasm.com?

To generate the report, if you are on Lion, open /Applications/Utilities/System Information.app. Go to the File menu and select 'Show System Report'. Go to the File menu again after the report opens and select the Save option. Make sure you save the report to a place where you can find it, such as your Desktop.

If you are using something other than Lion just launch /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler.app and select "Save…" from the File menu.

You can then attach the System Profiler or System Information report to the email to us and we will be happy to take a look at it.

Thanks!

So here's the thing. iTunes processed every CD without a single error and without churning. I then imported the files into ABB where they processed fine, albeit it took quite awhile.

I tested your theory with Handbrake and a couple DVDs, and they were interpreted without error and converted to MP4s. It's leading me to the conclusion that the problem, whatever it is, rests with ABB.

The next time I visit the library to borrow an audiobook, I'll RIP it with ABB and let you know the results. If I still have the same error, I'll be happy to submit the reports you're looking for.

Thanks!

I wondered if you solved the error 128? I have used AudioBook Builder for quite a while. I recently started getting error 128 oddly enough on disk 5 both times. The only recent change I can think of is update to OS X Lion.

In repeatedly receiving that -128 error on just the one CD, it's very likely due to the condition of the CD. Did you try importing with iTunes at all? Usually, with iTunes' error correction capability you can get something useable off of even a fairly scratched up CD. Then, the ripped files can be added back into the Audiobook Builder project you're working on.

Hi, just wanted to add to this thread which I've found very helpful. I was having difficulty with creating an audiobook from a CD because one of the files was throwing and error message. After reading this thread, I cleaned the CD and tried again without an immediate result, but after about five tries, it worked.
