Each time I enter an water/sewer payment, CheckBook Pro categorized it as a Political Contribution.

I have turned off AUTOFILL; didn't work.

I have clicked CHANGE, manually selected UTILITIES: Water/Sewer, then OK: didn't work.

I have deleted the entry, then RE-entered the payment, selecting UTILITIES: Water/Sewer: nope.

How to make CHECKBOOK Pro unlearn that my sewer payment isn't a political contribution. Or, maybe sometimes is can be.

Dave.

Dave,

CheckBook keys the Category autofill off of existing transactions, so there must be a place where the sewer payment was entered and it was categorized as a political contribution.

The best way of finding it and correcting it would be to do a search for your Political Contribution Category, and go through those entries to see if one or a few of those are sewer payments.

If you change all past instances of a sewer payment entry to the correct utilities category, autofill should key off the last category you used for a sewer payment.

You may also want to check your scheduled entries in the schedule tab, to make sure that the category there is utilities and not political contribution, if you are using scheduled transactions. If it was entered incorrectly originally, it will continue to create new entries with the wrong category.

Let us know if this helps. If it doesn't, you can email us at support@splasm.com and we can take steps to dig further into the issue. Thanks, Dave!

Dave,

Just had an idea about what's going on there. When you started using CheckBook Pro did you import from another finance app? There was a bug where using the Go Back button during an import in CheckBook Pro 2.1.1 and earlier led to some Categories receiving duplicate IDs. When two or more Categories end up with the same ID you'll see what you've got there - assigning a Category doesn't seem to "stick". If we can see your Accounts file (send it to support@splasm.com) we can tell which Categories have duplicate IDs and fix them, then send the file back to you. You'll need to assign the correct Category here and there afterward. The other route is to just remove either the Utilities:Water/Sewer or the Political Contributions Category and make a new one with the same name - but this may affect more than just those two Categories so keep an eye out. To manage your Categories double-click on the All Accounts item at the top of the Accounts drawer or select "Edit All Accounts..." from the Account menu at the top of your screen.

Randy & Keith, thank you.

I did import from MSMoney upon my conversion from PC to iMac & Check Book Pro. Likely a problem there.

I found incorrect Categories assignment with the very first Water/Sewer payment from 2001.

The fix that worked was manage my categories so as to delete the Political Contribution category. Ensuring AutoFill was ON, I assigned Utilites:Water & Sewer to the initial entry, and POOF! All entries are getting the correct category.

I give you two a 'high-five".
